I Am Not the Dog Whisperer!

Dog training has been a subject at our house for the past several weeks. Actually - it is that we cannot seem to get our dog trained that is the real issue! Me - being a "rules" girl watched an episode of the "Dog Whisperer" before we got our pup and now I'm trying to implement his teachings. Our teenage son is not so easily swayed! He thinks I'm pretty goofy when I try to use some of the techniques I've seen. My husband agrees to some extent but he also thinks I'm a little goofy when I try to use them! I would love to see Cesar Millan (the Dog Whisperer) in action. His show is amazing. I don't know if he is actually able to work with dogs as quickly as the show indicates, but there are some time frames given occasionally and it is really amazing! Dogs respond to his attitude and his instructions (mostly non-verbal).

Our Australian Shepherd is better about going outside for the bathroom but we do not have time to get him exercised like he needs. This breed is a high energy breed to begin with and when they are contained for long periods of time, they get very unruly and difficult to handle. We are working on getting him exercised and spending time with him so he understands who is the "Leader of the Pack". It takes time and energy - both of which seem to be in short supply in our household.

Just trying to train him makes me realize how much like Duke I am in relation to God. He wants me to understand that He is in control, He has my best interests in mind, and He has good things for me when I follow Him. But just like Duke, I think I'm the leader, my way is best and what I want is most important! Maybe it's not Duke that needs the training - maybe it's me!

Bravo! Applause! Ovation!

You will be amazed at how fast his solutions are because theya re behavior modification - not training! I run a over 2400 member Yahoo email list forcused on working with his techniques by helping each other with our probelm dogs that is 98% female - most men cannot sustain the 24/7 pack leader dynamic that seems to come so comparitely easy to women.

I only do extremem problem dog rescue aymore and am the list owner.

Consider teaching your dog how to walk on a treadmill - it makes alot of difference for those of us who dont have the time or energy to walk. (My Marley can run at 3.5 miles per hour for an hour and hardly pant! He goes on a variable speed incline teadmill before I take him for a walk to get the lead out. You can go to my youtube.com/cjanderson to see how to convert your dog to a leashless treadmill dog if you are so inclined!

Great post which summed up a lot of important points. Thank you.

If you are a new dog owner or have been training your pet for some time, you will want to train your dog to follow the heel command. Check out this Basics Dog Training website for tips and reviews of dog training information. ...

Your dog is so cute! This post reminds me of another blog I read the other day. Sandi of "Did you ever think about" also wrote about her dog and related it to God working in our lives. You might enjoy reading hers also.

Frasypoo - I miss posting. It was easy in the beginning to post but when I wasn't able to get to the computer, it was also easy to fall out of the habit. I miss reading everyone's posts as well. :)

Angel - I understand. We went for a while without a dog but then had 2 for a while!
